Domashniy

Almaty, Kazakhstan

All the global drinks trends, and more, are on show at this dive bar in the Kazakhstan capital. A ‘cuppa tea’ highball blends tea, ziziphora herb, vodka and lemon. A hojicha-ginger is a sweet, dessert-y pour with ginger, oat milk and toasted Japanese tea. And a blueberry matcha uses blueberry shrub and powdered green tea with a white chocolate foam. A clubby atmosphere reigns within the appealingly seedy, dishevelled space, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights when Domashniy keeps the party going from 7pm until 6am the next morning. Head bartender Maksim Abramov hails from Siberia and likes to keep his makes simple and replicable, with ingredients that you could find in many home fridges. (The vintage Japanese glassware he serves them in, however, is a bit harder to clone.) Clear your schedule for the next day and ‘dive’ on in.
