French 42

Almaty, Kazakhstan

While the French 42 cocktail – gin, lime and apple juice – might be the unsung cousin to the Champagne-topped French 45, there’s nothing inferior about this gin-specialist Kazakhstani bar. With opulent floral wallpapers, chandeliers, tasselled lamps and red neon signage sprawled in corners it looks a bit like a far-flung outlet of Paris’s famed Moulin Rouge, crossed with a neighbourhood French bistro. Taste your way through the selection of gins, from big brands to more boutique bottles, first in a G&T and then in a martini, negroni or, sure, a French 42. Or hop your way around the rest of the spirits on offer, from Irish whiskeys to calvados and port. For a city of just two million people, Almaty’s cocktail scene is getting seriously interesting, in no small part thanks to this bar.
