No one associates Doha with subtlety but glitzy Nobu stands out even in this glitterball city. A circular, shell-like structure that essentially forms its own private island in the sparkling blue of the Gulf of Arabia, it is number one in locals’ little black books when it comes to date spots. The food is equally beguiling. Chef Nobuyuki ‘Nobu’ Matsuhisa’s trademark blend of Japanese technique and Peruvian ingredients is like cat nip for globe-trotting types who know flawless shashimi and killer cocktails when they see them and are more than happy to shell out for them. A signature of sustainably fished black cod in miso really is as exceptional as everyone says, but so is scallops and foie gras with vanilla miso. On weekends, the seafood-focused Asian brunch menu is a welcome change from more generic options.
