Woo Lae Oak

Seoul, South Korea

Family-run, with a large, old-school dining room populated with sunny-hued wooden tables and chairs, Woo Lae Oak has been serving up note-perfect cold buckwheat noodles since 1946. While Pyongyang naengmyeon is the star of the show – with the traditional noodle dish served in a rich beef broth and topped with sliced Korean pear, slivers of beef and white kimchi – the piping-hot yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) is also a highlight (and somewhat less fiery when soaked up with rice), as is the bulgogi, which is grilled at the KBBQ on your table. While more expensive than other iterations of the same dishes you’ll find elsewhere in the city, Woo Lae Oak’s recipes are rich in flavour yet light on the palate, and the service dependably efficient and friendly. Find it a few minutes’ walk from Euljiro station.
