One of Barcelona's most popular tapas spots, Gresca is a cosy, unpretentious neighbourhood restaurant that never goes out of fashion. The superlative cooking at affordable prices and the bonhomie are just two of the reasons it's always bustling. Watch the chefs at work while sampling grilled eggplant, cod fritters and the best anchovies in town. Larger plates might include morel mushrooms stuffed with 'butifarra negra' (black sausage); veal sweetbreads; or grilled rabbit or quail. A must-try is the mushroom 'bikini,' a house version of the classic Catalan toasted sandwich with melted cheese and egg yolk. Save room for torrijas for dessert – a Spanish variation of French toast.
