The monochrome exterior of this gastro-tapas bar in Eixample may look chic, but the atmosphere inside Mont Bar is convivial. In warmer weather, tables spill outside onto the pavement and are just the place for people watching. Mont Bar is the dream-made-reality of Iván Castro, who hails from a family of hoteliers in Mont, Catalonia. He opened the popular Barcelona eatery when he was just 27, quickly winning a galaxy of accolades. ‘Mini bites’ are front and centre; but these aren’t just any ‘snacks’. Chef Fran Agudo brings his own avant-garde touch to ingredients sourced from the region, leaning into Japanese methodology and flavours. Sobrasada and Mahón cheese fill mochi; chicken skin and squid come in a sandwich; and vol-au-vents are filled with sea urchin, creamy stracciatella and wasabi. More substantial mains are divided into sections ‘The Sea’, ‘Seasonal’ and ‘Meats’. The wine choice is broad, whether red, white, rosé, orange, natural, biodynamic or sparkling take your fancy.
