Akelarre-SanSebastian-Spain-01

Akelarre

San Sebastian, Spain

Two tasting menus, both equally priced, offer two different sides of this Basque institution, set on a stunning patch of coast overlooking the Bay of Biscay. But you needn't stick to the straight and narrow here; chef Pedro Subijana is all for mixing and matching. Whether you opt for Basque culinary celebration Aranori (the sloe plant) pairing the likes of red prawns with txakoli or scallop with barnacles – or pan-European Bekarki (arugla), with options such as Iberian pork shoulder with shallots and The Thinnest Apple Pie in the World, the final selection is up to you. The restaurant is only 10 minutes outside of culinary hub San Sebastian, but with the plush Akelarre Hotel right on site, there's no need to rush back or even organise post-meal taxis.
