Ganbara

San Sebastian, Spain

A longtime favourite of legendary Basque chef Juan Mari Arzak, Ganbara has been a much-loved haunt in San Sebastian's charming old town ever since it opened in 1984. Behind the traditional wooden doors and shutters, the packed ground-level, walk-in only pintxos bar is for casual bites or head to the cosy downstairs restaurant space for seated dining with a lively, family-run feel. Meaty wild mushrooms with egg yolk and foie gras is a signature, alongside fresh grilled prawns and Jabugo ham. Other classics include white asparagus, garlicky anchovies, and small hot peppers. Fresh fish is charcoal-grilled and served for two to share (think red bream, hake, sole, wild turbot, monkfish) and the desserts are much to write home about. Whatever you do, don't miss out on a slice of the famous 'burnt' cheesecake. There's an excellent wine list showcasing riojas, cavas and other Spanish labels.
