Gymkhana

London, UK

There had been posh Indian restaurants in London before this one but Gymkhana was a game-changer, the sort of place that the millennial Sethi siblings of owner JKS Restaurants (Jyotin, Karam and Sunaina) would go to spend their own money rather than be taken by their parents. The wood-panelled ground-floor is better for business lunches and the hard-of-hearing; the basement lounge with its DJ beats and loungey furnishings, is the sort of place where an early supper might easily turn into 11pm were table-turning not so ruthlessly enforced. But Gymkhana would not have remained at the top of the capital’s Indian dining tree for almost 10 years were the cooking not as compelling as the surroundings are cool, with familiar curry- and grill-house dishes thrillingly rebooted with superior ingredients.
