A little bit kitsch, a lot crazy, Islington’s Laki Kane is pure escapism for fun times only. From the bold tropical décor to the quirky drinking vessels (anything from sculpted tiki cups and shot-filled surfboard to a quaich, fish tank or ornate punch bowl) guests are catapulted to far-flung climes upon entry. Upstairs is a rum distillery, so, as you can imagine, this particular spirit ranks highly on the menu (rum-making classes also available), but so too are tropical fruits and homemade cane syrups, all of which are shaken, stirred and muddled into sun-shinning sips. Roughly themed around Polynesian pours, orders might include Fatal Attraction, with vodka, lychee, aloe vera and lime, or perhaps a Prickly Dragon with myriad rums, chamomile liqueur, prickly pear syrup, mandarin juice and dehydrated dragon fruit. Riffs on classic tropical cocktail tropes are a given. Buckle up, this is the sort of place where the late-night magic happens.
