Halekulani

Honolulu, US

Halekulani translates from Hawaiian into ‘house befitting heaven’. Founded in 1917, the Waikiki Beach institution offers a lofty paradisiacal experience. Following a buyout from Japanese giant, Mitsui Fudosan, the entire property was remodeled. A ‘seven shades of white’ decor was implemented based on the philosophy that the cool ivory tones would enhance views of the lush green foliage and deep aquamarine water. The water - and a stunning view of Diamond Head - is accessible at Grey’s Beach, the hotel’s private cove. Inland, the Halekulani’s pool features a 1.2 million glass tile mosaic of a Cattleya orchid. More relaxation can be found at the HalekulaniSpa, a renown specialist in both traditional Hawaiian treatments as well as historical Japanese techniques. To foster an intimate experience, accommodations are distributed across five buildings on the five acre property. The lodgings maintain the minimalist decor, but offer some very modern touches like Toto toilets and a house-produced television station celebrating Hawaiian culture. Lanai or outdoor spaces are included in every one of the 453 rooms and suites. The grounds are a bubble of zen right off Waikiki’s bustling tourist district. However, with seven restaurants and bars at the Halekulani, there’s little reason to leave.
