Every restaurant tells a story but Vinai – created by chef Yia Vang – does so more than most. Named after the Ban Vinai Refugee Camp in Thailand, where Vang’s parents met and he was born, this one-of-a-kind dining spot is a homage to culinary corners often left unexplored. Showcasing marginalised Hmong cuisine, interpreted through Vang’s skilled and practiced modern lens, a meal here is a thorough cultural experience. Dishes range from sesame ginger vinaigrette-dressed cucumber to devilled eggs with Thai basil sambal and crisp shrimp, or double-cut pork chop with tamarind lemongrass glaze. While most of us may think of refugee camps in a negative light, through his food, service and approach – for example, pairing innovative cocktails with dishes – Vang makes Ban Vinai’s sense of community and culture a focus for celebration.
