Oiji Mi
New York, US
Before Oiji Mi, there was Oiji, a beloved Korean restaurant in the East Village run by chefs Brian Kim and Tae Kyung Ku. In its place, Brian Kim’s next venture, Oiji Mi, transplants Oiji’s original spirit to a larger stage in the Flatiron District, with added drama and sophistication. The entire operation is inspired by the Korean concept of ‘jeong’, a feeling of love and attachment; and this notion sets the tone for the warm hospitality, the dishes plated up with passion and care, and the considered approach to flavour and texture. ‘Mi’ means full of taste and beauty and beyond the menu, this can be seen in the decadent interiors, rich in autumnal and jewel hues (and a far cry from OG Oiji’s minimalism). You can dine à la carte in the bar or lounge, but the best choice is the five-course, prix-fixe menu in the dining room. Seasonal dishes balance classical Korean elements with creative updates: scallop with truffle brown butter and beansprout broth, for example, or doughnuts with gruyere, raclette, sweet rice and creme fraiche ice-cream.
