Known for his warm hospitality and knack for throwing a legendary party, Ignacio “Nacho” Jimenez (formerly of Ghost Donkey and Saxon + Parole) has fully come into his own with Superbueno, a joyful Mexican-American themed bar that opened in the East Village in early 2023. A sense of carefree playfulness defines the upbeat place, where cumbia sets a groovy pace and a dialed-in drink menu puts Mexican flavours like mezcal, guajillo chiles and xocolati bitters on a pedestal. Large-format drinks that serve four, like the house Tepache, spiked with tequila, shochu, fermented cucumber, yuzu and chili de arbol, keep the merriment going late into the night. Most importantly, Jimenez has cultivated a real sense of community at the bar – like a modern Mexican-American cheers, Superbueno is a place where everyone seems to know everyone else’s name.
