Capella Hanoi

Hanoi, Vietnam

For its first foray into Vietnam, Capella chose a commanding corner plot opposite pretty Hoan Kiem Lake, just steps from the legendary Hanoi Opera House that gave designer Bill Bensley his inspiration. As you might expect of a hotel inspired by opera, Capella Hanoi is heavy on drama. It’s there in the hand-painted murals, rich jewel tones, liberal use of velvet and 1,000-plus pieces of operatic memorabilia scattered throughout. Bensley’s studio designed everything from the golden bathroom fittings to the French balconies that sit ready and waiting for their Evita moment. Even the basement swimming pool has been luxed up with mirrored walls and crystal chandeliers. There’s also a gym, sauna, steam room, plunge pool and two treatment rooms for facials and massages. Of the 47 unique rooms and suites, the most special are the four top-floor Opera Suites. Each has its own expansive terrace, where you can start your day with a thick Vietnamese coffee. You can even round things off with a nightcap at the original zinc counter in the opulent Diva’s Lounge, whose swagged red drapes were just made for curtain calls.
