De Muze

Antwerp, Belgium

A titan of Antwerp’s bar scene, De Muze has been pulling the crowds since 1964. Threatened with closure in 2014, the jazz café – which counts John Lee Hooker and Memphis Slim among former guests – was saved through the rallying of regulars. Red-brick walls frame the warmly lit temple to relaxed socialising, with stools along a long wooden bar and mezzanine level tables. Bands take the stage nightly at 10pm, while patrons sip great-value native craft beers and speciality brews, spirits and mixed drinks. For a caffeine hit, try the koffie verkeerd (‘wrong coffee’), a superlative incarnation of the Belgian take on café au lait.
