At Somos (meaning ‘we are’ in Spanish), chef-owner Alejandra Espinoza combines influences from her childhood in Ecuador with her culinary studies in France to create globally inspired dishes using local ingredients, flavours and traditions. The extensive à la carte menu is bursting with colour and good humour and begins with the desserts section under the heading ‘plan with the end in mind’ – whet your appetite with Ecuadorean chocopops and homemade ice cream. Savoury starters include purple corn dough empanadas, which are great for sharing, and mains such as pulled guinea pig dumplings or shredded guinea pig pizza made from cassava. For the full experience, the Esmeraldas set menu journeys through plantain and prawn soup, shrimp ceviche, encocado stew and a roasted pineapple piña colada dessert. The beautiful dining room is a shrine to all the colours and materials of Ecuador.
