Maison Ruggieri
Paris, France
Attention, poetry lovers – this one’s for you. Reflecting its artistic tendencies, Maison Ruggieri’s menu treats dishes as ‘poems’ and courses as ‘les strophes’ (verses). Dishes have suitably evocative and mysterious one or two-word names: Storm or Disorientation, for example. The menu has a series of little poems to whet your appetite. A starter of langoustine is described as follows: "There is a precise moment when the sea ceases to be water and becomes flesh. The langoustine arrives barely blanched, still firm, sweet and salty." But really, this is what you’d expect from a Michelin-starred establishment in the bougie Palais-Royal district, a macaron’s throw from the Jardin Tuileries. Eponymous Italian chef Marco Ruggieri is in charge, surprising diners with his usual madcap combinations: a starter of cucumber comes with sambuca granita, and a sweet soufflé brings together mushroom, whisky, cardamon and chocolate, for example. With contrasting cream and navy accents, the intimate dining room is as elegant as its Champs Elysées clientele.
