Saint James Paris

Paris, France

This magnificent chateau looks like it’s been plucked straight from the regal streets of Versailles and dropped into Paris’ 16th arrondissement. In reality, the building has occupied the site since 1892, formerly housing the Thiers Foundation – a French institution for gifted academics. Today it’s a member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux collection and promises mansion-style quarters tucked into manicured gardens. The 16th arrondissement and its bourgeois reputation makes the most sense for such a stately building, but interiors aren’t quite what you’d expect from a chateau. Instead of glitzy chandeliers and opulent details, designer Laura Gonzalez has infused neoclassical interiors with plant motifs, geometric patterns and Japanese wallpapers. Nature inspires the hotel’s facilities too: the Bellefeuille restaurant has a Green Michelin star for its plant-heavy cuisine, while the Guerlain spa offers treatments inspired by orchids and bees. Holding onto its academic heritage, Saint James Paris continues to serve as a private members club, allowing hotel guests to network with local intellectuals during their stay.
