Buck-Breck-Berlin-Germany-01

Buck & Breck

Berlin, Germany

Despite its 21st-century bar credentials – nondescript door with blinking 'closed' sign, a sleek central bar seating just 14 guests – Buck and Breck doesn't accept credit cards and mobile phones are banned. Groups aren't accepted either and the atmosphere is hushed, with noise kept to a minimum. The low-lit space, with its matt-black walls and quirky objects d'art (including a gold chainsaw hovering behind the bar and a glittering, glass-encased stuffed plush octopus), is owned by legendary mixologist Gonçalo de Sousa Monteiro, who favours strong, icy pours. Menus change regularly but examples in the past have included the Gimlet Twist – a ratio-perfect concoction of gin, lime and woodruff cordial. With its esteemed reputation and limited seating getting into this place can be hard; leaving, equally so.
