Julius

Berlin, Germany

This monochrome café and restaurant is the more casual little brother to Dylan Watson-Brawn and Spencer Christenson’s highflying Ernst restaurant across the road. Open all day Thursday to Sunday, Julius offers coffee and light bites during the day, before pivoting to small plates and wine at night. An accessible alternative to the more expensive establishment across the road, Julius has a generous walk-in policy as well as a takeaway offering. Chef Shunsuke Naogoka’s micro-seasonal menu of precise and interesting small plates – inflected with the tastes of his Japanese heritage – changes weekly, making use of ingredients sourced from artisan suppliers. In the evenings, expect to scoff plates of beetroot dolloped with yoghurt and scattered with umeboshi, and delicately poached onsen-style eggs in creamy pumpkin pureé. The wine list is largely biodynamic with low-alcohol options like plum-vinegar sodas. During the day, Japanese breakfast brioche is used to make sandwiches with sweet and savoury fillings, while high-quality coffees are served by co-owner (and master barista) Shoji Hara.
