Akoko

London, UK

Many a chef would have blanched at the hysterical hype surrounding the 2020 opening of this West African restaurant in Fitzrovia. When Akoko opened – all textured, terracotta walls and distinctive West African artwork and pottery on display – its 10-course evening set menu lived up to expectations, offering a kaleidoscopic gastronomic journey through Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal. A few years and as many head chefs on, Ayo Adeyemi is now in the kitchen making material the creative imaginings of owner and recipe developer Ajo Akokomi. The menu is as boundary-pushing as at the restaurant’s inception, plating up suya squab pigeon, Senegambian mussel soup, and jollof rice served with blue lobster in a tongue-prickling Senegalese rof sauce. Of three drinks options, the signature Akoko is a must – a selection of African wines and regionally-inspired cocktails matched to the diverse ingredients utilised in Adeyemi’s cooking.
