Hunan

London, UK

Some restaurants have fame thrust upon them when they launch; others, such as 40-year-old Hunan, go from being an insider secret for London’s Chinese cuisine cognoscenti to a slightly worst-kept secret, though one still very much known only to savvy diners. A slightly out-of-the-way location in Belgravia and restrained furnishings might lead passers-by to assume that Hunan is nothing more than a smart local for smart locals but the cooking of chef YS Peng and his son Michael is something else. Simply tell the waitstaff how hungry you are, how much spice you can tolerate and how much you want to spend and a personalised tasing menu (12-18 courses) of refined versions of Cantonese classics will arrive; the more often you visit, the more interesting the cooking tends to become.
