Mangal 2

London, UK

Mangal 2 is one of London’s cult restaurants, having transformed from a typical ocakbasi grill house into an edgy Dalston eatery beloved by the city’s food crowd. When Ali Dirik opened his first restaurant in the 1990s, its juicy kebabs and plump borek made it an instant hit but, facing financial difficulties, London’s self-styled king of Kofte was required to change course in 2021, with sons Ferhat and Sertaç taking over. Sertaç was fresh from a stint working in the Noma-owned 108 in Copenhagen. A lick of paint later and the city’s most-loved grill joint was entirely reimagined. Where once the menu reflected the offering found up and down Stoke Newington Road, the restaurant now offers a compelling à la carte selection of innovative, exciting plates. It’s not silver service dining ¬– interiors are pared-back and congenial – but it’s tops most Londoner’s must-eat lists. Open for lunch and dinner, the team serve up sourdough pides with kaymak butter, delicate mushroom manti dumplings and red pepper-stuffed cabbage leaves. Koftes are still on the menu but they’re made with sustainable Welsh mutton these days.
