Mint Gun Club

London, UK

In London’s too-cool-for-school Stoke Newington (Stokey to the locals) and pegged as a tea room and aperitivo bar, this neat little place is the neighbourhood joint everyone wants nearby. Inspiration is far reaching, with bar veteran Richie Hunt (see Trailer Happiness and Milk & Honey, which previously topped The World’s 50 Best Bars list), channelling “the convivial excitement of an expatriate lifestyle”. Cue Athenian vermouths, Icelandic vodka, coconut wine et al., with syrups, tisanes and essences made in house. Hunt’s creative clout sings with well-balanced concoctions like the signature Gun Club (cacao nib gin, kaffir lime leaf cordial and aniseed liqueur) served at -14C. While the name is taken from the desert race in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the space is less Ralph Steadman trip, more a night at your stylish mate’s house: think wooden shutters, reclaimed furniture and parlour palms. The food? Picky globetrotting plates – mezze, tapas etc. – using surplus from the bar.
