Difficult though it may be to conjure the spirit of snow-clad mountains and après-ski refreshments in the heart of sunshiny Atlanta, Avize is a restaurant that evokes the Alps with aplomb. All wood panelling, yawning hearths and fir-tree frescoes, it's a space that combines flashes of inspiration from France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Germany under one roof – and its chalet-like character is all the more striking set against the backdrop of one of the city's most dynamic neighbourhoods. Echoing the decor, the menu is Alpine-inspired, but with a crafty Southern twist. The French classic frog legs, for instance, is reimagined Atlanta-style: smothered in a lemon pepper wet sauce, a nod to the city's beloved wing culture popularised by the legendary J. R. Crickets. That same sense of thoughtful fusion extends to the wine list, which features an impressive selection of pours from Alpine and wider European regions alongside American favourites.
