Buzzy, bustling brasserie Balthazar has been feeding hungry New Yorkers since opening in 1997, with its London offshoot following in 2012. Chef Keith McNally knows how to please the crowds at this high-ceilinged, red leather-boothed SoHo stalwart, with waiting staff in long white aprons serving French-inspired favourites such as onion soup gratinée, whole-roasted chicken with pomme purée, duck confit and steak au poivre. Seafood lovers can get their fill with grand fruits de mer platters or freshly shucked oysters. There's a plats du jour menu at the weekends, serving bouillabaisse on a Friday, beef bourguignon on Saturdays and Sunday is lobster frites. The profiteroles with ice cream and warm chocolate sauce are de rigueur. This is a place that's as ideal for a brunch or business lunch as it is for romantic dinners and special occasions.
