Chef's Table at Brooklyn Fare
New York, US
Surely the world’s only two-Michelin-star restaurant that’s hidden behind a grocery store, Chef's Table at Brooklyn Fare – which opened in 2009 before relocating to Hell’s Kitchen in 2016 – is a welcoming oasis where warm service meets high-end ingredients sourced from around the world. Here, chefs Max Natmessnig and Marco Prins – both of whom earned their stripes in world-class restaurants around the world, eventually meeting in the kitchen at Oud Sluis in the Netherlands – serve up seafood and shellfish-focused tasting menus inspired by Japanese cuisine, European flavours and French technique. Dishes such as grilled Norwegian langoustine with satay sauce, pandan leaf foam, Thai basil and purple curry powder exemplify this exciting approach, as do others like the Japanese bluefin tuna tartare with grilled pickled corn and flowers. Views of the kitchen are available from every booth in the dining room, but the hot ticket is the 20-seat counter that surrounds the open kitchen. Competition for a seat there is fierce, but, for a lucky few, the investment is well-rewarded.
