Masa
New York, US
Regarded by many as the best (and most expensive) Japanese restaurant in New York, Masa is an exclusive sushi counter and dining room run by chef Masayoshi ‘Masa’ Takayama on the fourth floor of the upscale Time Warner Center. A feast for a special occasion, the Hinoki Counter Experience (for $950) gets you a seat at the specially created counter made of solid Hinoki wood and your own sushi chef. The Omakase menu ($750), another spectacular feast, will see you seated at a table in the dining room. You’ll come across dishes such as caviar-topped toro tartare, kegani crab, geoduck nigiri and matcha mille-feuille. Prepared fast with exceptional mastery for absolute freshness, every ingredient is treated with the utmost respect and using traditional techniques. Accordingly, no photographs are allowed (and you’re respectfully asked to abstain from wearing any strong scents) better to appreciate the exquisite food – and tips, in keeping with Japanese hospitality, are not accepted.
