Prime Seafood Palace
Toronto, Canada
This is a gastronom’s palace, where all bow down in the name of ultra-fresh seafood and marbled meats. The sleek, minimalist space feels more like a modern Japanese sushiya or Scandi cathedral than ornate imperial pile, lined in maple wood slats, burnished lighting and countertop seating. But it’s actor-chef Matty Matheson’s menu that rolls out the royal red carpet: caviar sold by the ‘bite’, ‘scoop’ or ‘tin’; a lavish shrimp cocktail and seared scallops sweetened by braised daikon and XO sauce. For main courses things shift decidedly onto land, with offerings like black pepper crust fillet mignon, A5 wagyu and duck breast with seared foie gras, much of it cooked on an open wood-burning hearth. Side dishes are given just as much attention as the main event, with classic Yorkshire pudding joining swede with maple bacon and gouda. Even on trendy Queen Street West, where there’s always a new hot spot to be found, this is a menu – and a space – that can hold attention.
