Semma
New York, US
Step through the doors at Semma and Greenwich Village melts away, replaced with the kaleidoscopic colour and dialled up flavours of south India. Inspired by the tropical identities of Kerala and Tamil Nadu – all coconut, curry leaf and net-fresh seafoods – the restaurant, which means ‘fantastic’ in Tamil, hits the classic notes while also rigorously innovating. Crispy-chewy paniyaram rice and lentil dumplings come with asafoetida and sweet chutney, while thin and lacy dosas are accompanied by spiced potato masala and refreshing sambar. Alongside more traditional ingredients such as aubergine and carrot, you’ll find lobster, Dungeness crab and angus oxtail bringing a new and decadent spin to star dishes. Add in the grass weave ceiling, rattan lighting, rainbow wallpapers and the beachy cocktails, and you could almost be on the beach in Kochi.
