After a decade of cooking around the globe, from Bologna to Shanghai, Brandon Jew found his greatest inspiration at home in San Francisco's Chinatown. Located in a historic space on lantern-lit Waverly Place that previously housed the iconic Four Seas and Hang Far Low restaurants, Mister Jiu's is his attempt to transform people's expectations of what a Chinese-American restaurant can be. He uses only the best organic produce from local purveyors and makes as many ingredients as he can in-house: from tofu to rice vinegar, fermented beans and more. For a standout evening opt for the tasting menu, a mix of individually-plated and shared dishes such as wok-charred squid, dim sum, longjing tea king salmon and Peking-style whole roast duck. A la carte diners will be equally impressed.
