In a nutshell: a concise, hyper-seasonal menu of elevated, Italian- and French-inspired dishes from an all-female team of British exports, served in a smart, light-filled dining room. Interest piqued? Paper-thin shards of bread – a little like charred lavash – and well-made aperitifs starts things off, while a daily changing menu might present vermouth-steamed clams with Florence fennel, pork chop on a bed of flavourful flageolet beans or blushing hanger steak chargrilled over rosemary. Follow it up with peach, almond and polenta cake, fig leaf ice cream or grape sorbet. It’s all quite simple in conception – think casual fine dining at its best: a few quality ingredients carefully combined to create refined iterations of rustic favourites that afford maximum flavour with minimal fuss. In that, chefs Jess Shadbolt and Clare de Boer’s tenure at London icon The River Café is in evidence.
