Gajalee

Mumbai, India

This original outpost of Gajalee (there are three more in Mumbai) represents a true cross-section of the city’s society, feeding everyone from Bollywood actors and cricket stars to politicians and local families. No one is here for the decor of the plain, air-conditioned dining room; rather they come for the long menu of seafood dishes from the Maharashtra coast above and below Mumbai, faultlessly prepared. Crab is the house speciality, though prawns and lobster are also served in similar tandoori and chilli preparations; Bombay duck – aka lizard fish – is also worth ordering, either as a bombil fry (said to have been invented here) or stuffed with prawns.
